A wooden dining table has a difficult job. On the same day, it might hold hot plates, cold drinks, homework, parcels and a vase that turns out not to be completely watertight.
Wood is durable, but the finish protecting it still needs sensible care. The complication is that two tables described as “wooden” may require different treatment. Solid timber, wood veneer, lacquered surfaces, oiled finishes and painted details should not all be cleaned or maintained in the same way.
The first rule is therefore simple: identify the construction and finish of your table. Product information for CFS wooden dining tables should be your starting point, followed by the manufacturer’s care guidance.
Routine cleaning does not need to involve polish, oil or strong disinfectant.
Remove loose crumbs with a soft cloth. If the care instructions allow damp cleaning, use a well-wrung cloth rather than leaving the surface visibly wet. Follow with a dry cloth so moisture does not remain around joints, edges or extensions.
Avoid abrasive sponges and scouring pads. They can dull a lacquered surface or leave fine scratches that are particularly visible when light falls across the tabletop.
Spraying cleaner directly onto the table is also best avoided. The liquid can collect along gaps, grain lines and extension mechanisms before it is wiped away. Apply an approved product to the cloth instead, using only the recommended amount.
Water may appear harmless, but a wet glass left in one position can leave a pale ring. Coloured drinks, oils and sauces can be more difficult to remove if they reach an absorbent finish.
Blot the spill rather than spreading it across the table. Pay particular attention to:
If liquid has entered an extending mechanism, consult the care instructions before opening or closing the table. Moving the leaves while the area is wet may carry moisture deeper into the construction.
Coasters, placemats and trivets are simple ways to prevent heat rings, scratches and moisture marks. Hot serving dishes should never be placed directly on a wooden surface unless the manufacturer explicitly says it is safe.
A tablecloth can be helpful during family meals or craft activities, but avoid leaving a plastic-backed covering on the table indefinitely. Trapped moisture and heat may affect some finishes.
Check the underside of decorative objects too. Rough ceramic pots, stone ornaments and metal trays can mark the surface when moved. Felt pads provide a useful buffer, although they should be kept clean so trapped grit does not act like sandpaper.
A natural-looking table does not necessarily need oil. It may already have a lacquer, sealant or another finish that prevents oil from being absorbed.
Applying the wrong product can make a tabletop sticky, patchy or difficult to refinish later. Silicone-containing polish may also leave a residue that attracts dust or complicates professional repair.
Some solid wood dining tables are designed to be maintained with a particular oil or wax. If yours is one of them, use the named product and follow the specified frequency. More product is not better; excess treatment can build up on the surface.
When in doubt, ask the manufacturer rather than relying on a general “wood care” label.
Natural wood changes with age. Colour can deepen or mellow, and sections exposed to sunlight may change faster than shaded areas.
If a bowl or runner stays in the same position for months, the protected wood beneath it may eventually look different from the surrounding surface. Moving decorative items occasionally helps the table age more evenly.
Strong heat and rapid temperature changes are also unhelpful. Try not to position a table directly beside a radiator or powerful heat source. Maintain reasonable ventilation and avoid pushing the table tightly against a damp external wall.
Wood naturally responds to changes in humidity. Minor movement does not always indicate a fault, but severe or sudden changes in the room can place unnecessary stress on joints and panels.
Pens, glue, paint and craft knives introduce risks that placemats were not designed to handle. Use a protective work board or a suitable temporary covering that will not transfer colour or trap moisture.
Check the covering before placing it on the table. A grain of sand or dried piece of glue underneath can scratch the surface while the user works above it.
Laptops also produce heat. A stand or protective mat can prevent one warm device from sitting in the same place for hours.
An extending dining table should be opened periodically according to its instructions, rather than leaving the mechanism untouched for years.
Keep runners and hinges free from crumbs and grit. Do not lubricate them unless the manufacturer recommends a suitable product, as general household oil can attract dirt or damage surrounding finishes.
Store removable leaves exactly as directed. Some must lie flat while others are designed for vertical storage. Wrap them in breathable protection and keep them in a dry indoor environment, not a damp garage or loft with large temperature changes.
Before opening the table, make sure there is enough room and ask for help if the top is heavy. Pull from the specified points so the mechanism is not twisted.
A light surface mark and a deep scratch are different problems. Do not begin sanding, colouring or applying oil until you know what the finish is.
For a valuable table or a mark that penetrates the surface, professional advice is the safer option. Home repairs can make the damaged area darker or more noticeable, particularly on veneer or stained timber.
Prevention remains easier: lift objects rather than dragging them and check the table before extending it.
Good care does not mean covering a beautiful table permanently. It means understanding which everyday risks cause lasting damage.
Use coasters and heat protection, clean spills promptly and avoid unapproved treatments. Whether you are comparing compact tables or a larger selection of dining tables, consider the finish alongside size and style. The best table for your household is one whose appearance and care requirements both suit the way you live.
