SleepSoul Space Mattress - 3000 Pocket Sprung - Sizes Available

Most of us spend thousands of hours on a mattress but give it very little attention until something spills or a dip becomes noticeable. A simple care routine can keep the sleeping surface fresher and help the mattress wear more evenly.

There is one important warning before you begin: mattress construction varies. A pocket-sprung model, memory foam mattress and traditional double-sided mattress may have completely different turning and cleaning instructions.

Always keep the care information supplied with your mattress. If you are comparing new mattresses, check whether the chosen model can be rotated, turned over or used on an adjustable bed before ordering.

Let a new mattress breathe

A new mattress may have a noticeable “new product” smell when its packaging is removed. Place it in a well-ventilated room and follow the manufacturer’s instructions about how long it should be left before use.

Rolled or compressed mattresses usually need time to regain their intended shape. Do not assume every model is ready to sleep on immediately. The expansion period should be stated in its instructions.

Keep plastic packaging away from children and dispose of it responsibly once you are satisfied that the mattress has arrived in good condition.

Use a suitable mattress protector

A protector forms a removable layer between the sleeper and the mattress. It can help shield the surface from perspiration, accidental spills and everyday marks.

Choose one in the correct size and depth. A protector that is too small can pull at the mattress corners, while a loose one may gather underneath the sheet.

Wash the protector according to its own care label and make sure it is fully dry before returning it to the bed. Waterproof protectors are especially useful for children’s rooms, guest beds and households where drinks are sometimes taken upstairs.

A protector reduces risk; it does not make the mattress completely waterproof. Spills still need prompt attention.

Air the bed instead of making it immediately

Pulling the duvet back for a while in the morning allows warmth and moisture to disperse. Opening a window can also help when weather and security permit.

Occasionally remove the bedding and protector for a longer airing period. The room should be dry and reasonably ventilated. Avoid placing a damp mattress outside or against an external wall in the hope that it will dry more quickly.

If condensation is a recurring problem, address the room’s ventilation rather than treating the mattress alone.

Should you rotate or flip your mattress?

These terms are often confused.

Rotating means turning the mattress from head to foot while keeping the same sleeping surface uppermost. Flipping means turning it over so the opposite surface becomes the top.

Many modern memory foam mattresses and hybrid designs are single-sided. Flipping one can place the comfort layers underneath and leave you sleeping on a surface that was never intended to face upwards.

Some traditional mattresses are double-sided and do need turning. Others should only be rotated. Follow the schedule supplied with your exact model.

Mattresses are awkward and heavier than they appear. Clear the surrounding space, use the handles only as directed and ask another person to help. Handles may be intended for positioning rather than carrying the full weight.

Check the bed base

A mattress depends on its support. An unsuitable, damaged or incorrectly assembled base can contribute to discomfort and uneven wear.

Inspect slats periodically. They should be secure, correctly spaced and supported in the centre where required. Replace damaged components rather than allowing the mattress to bridge a gap.

When pairing a mattress with a new bed, confirm that the two are compatible. The correct mattress size is not the only consideration; the manufacturer may specify the type of base and maximum spacing between slats.

How to clean the surface safely

Remove the bedding and inspect the mattress in good daylight. If the manufacturer permits vacuuming, use clean equipment, low suction and an appropriate upholstery attachment. Work slowly over the surface and along seams without pulling at the fabric.

Do not saturate a mattress. Moisture that reaches the internal layers can be difficult to remove and may create a larger problem than the original mark.

For spills:

  • Remove bedding and the protector.
  • Blot liquid with a clean, absorbent cloth.
  • Do not scrub or spread the affected area.
  • Follow the manufacturer-approved stain treatment.
  • Allow the mattress to dry fully before remaking the bed.

Avoid improvised chemical mixtures, steam cleaners and carpet-cleaning machines unless the mattress manufacturer specifically approves them. Foam and natural fillings can react badly to heat or excess water.

For extensive staining, persistent odours or biological contamination, seek professional advice.

Do not bend or stand on the mattress

Children jumping on a bed can damage internal components as well as the frame underneath. Folding a mattress to move it may also affect springs, borders or foam layers.

Some all-foam mattresses can flex to a limited degree, but that does not mean they can be tightly folded. Follow the moving instructions supplied with the product.

Use a protective mattress bag during a house move and keep the mattress away from dirty floors, walls and the roof of a vehicle. Do not store it in a damp garage.

When care is no longer enough

Cleaning and rotation cannot restore a mattress that no longer provides appropriate support.

Consider its condition if you notice:

  • Persistent or worsening sagging
  • Damaged springs or protruding components
  • A split or badly deteriorated cover
  • Discomfort that improves when sleeping elsewhere
  • A lasting damp or mould problem
  • Noise or movement that has increased substantially

Also inspect the base before blaming the mattress. A broken slat or weakened frame can create very similar symptoms.

When replacement becomes necessary, compare the support and construction of pocket spring mattresses, foam models and hybrid mattresses according to your comfort needs.

Keep the routine simple

Mattress care should not require a cupboard full of products. Use a washable protector, air the sleeping area, deal with spills quickly and rotate or turn the mattress only as instructed.

Those few habits are more useful than an occasional dramatic clean—and considerably less likely to damage the place where you sleep.
