Woburn Wide Chest - 4+3 Drawer - Rustic Oak

A chest of drawers can fit neatly against a bedroom wall and still be completely wrong for the space. The drawers may open into the bed, the top may be too high for the mirror above it, or the narrow-looking unit may hold far less than expected.

That is because the useful size of a chest is not just its width. Depth, height, drawer arrangement and the space needed in front all affect how it works.

The best place to begin is not with colour or drawer count. Begin with what you want to store and where the furniture will stand.

Measure the chest with its drawers open

Most people measure the empty wall and compare it with the width shown online. That confirms whether the chest can stand there, but not whether it can be used.

You also need the overall depth of the furniture and the distance the drawers travel when fully open. A chest opposite the bed may fit when closed but leave no comfortable room to stand when a drawer is pulled out.

Place masking tape on the floor to mark the width and depth. Then allow additional room at the front and walk past it as you normally would. Open nearby wardrobe and bedroom doors during the test. Two pieces of furniture can fit individually but obstruct one another when both are in use.

Remember that product dimensions may not include every projection in the same way. Handles, shaped tops and decorative fronts can add to the practical depth. Use the technical measurements supplied for the individual product whenever available.

Wide, tall or narrow?

A wide chest spreads storage across a lower piece of furniture. The top can hold a mirror, lamp, jewellery box or everyday items, and the lower height makes much of the surface easy to reach.

The obvious requirement is wall space. A wide chest of drawers can make a bedroom feel well balanced, but it may leave too little room for a bedside cabinet or comfortable access around the bed.

A tall chest of drawers uses vertical space instead. It can provide several drawers while occupying a smaller section of floor, which is useful when the available wall is narrow.

The higher drawers may be less convenient for children or shorter users, and the top surface may be too high for items needed every day. Tall furniture also needs particular care with stability and wall fixing.

A narrow chest of drawers can fit into the gap beside a wardrobe, in an alcove or along a short wall. Do not assume that narrow means shallow. A piece may be slim from side to side while still projecting well into the room.

Choose the shape according to the wall, but judge the storage by the drawers themselves.

Drawer count does not tell you the whole story

A six-drawer chest does not automatically hold more than a four-drawer one. Six shallow drawers may offer less usable space than four broad, deep drawers.

The arrangement matters as much as the number. Wide drawers are useful for folded jeans, knitwear and T-shirts. Smaller drawers make it easier to separate underwear, socks and accessories. A mixture of both can prevent every item from being stored in the same large space.

Think about your actual folding habits. If you prefer to fold clothes into broad piles, narrow drawers may feel restrictive. If large drawers in your current furniture become untidy, several smaller compartments may work better.

Check whether all drawers are the same depth. Some chests have shallower upper drawers and deeper lower ones. That can be a very practical arrangement: smaller belongings remain easy to find at the top, while bulkier clothing sits below.

Product photographs can make drawers look deeper than they are. Internal drawer dimensions, when supplied, are more useful than the size of the front panel.

Depth matters in two different ways

A deeper chest can provide greater storage from the same width of wall. It can work well in a generous bedroom where the furniture does not interrupt movement.

In a narrow bedroom, depth is often the dimension that causes trouble. A chest may leave the wall clear yet reduce the route between the bed and doorway. Once the drawers are open, the room can feel even tighter.

The ranges for chests of drawers 30cm to 50cm deep can be useful when floor space is limited, but the layout still deserves attention. A shallow drawer needs thoughtful organisation so that folded items fit without being forced.

Deep drawers should not simply become places where clothing is piled on top of itself. Storing folded items upright or using dividers can make the full depth easier to see and use.

What should each drawer hold?

It helps to assign a purpose before buying.

Smaller top drawers are convenient for socks, underwear, watches, belts and frequently used accessories. Middle drawers work well for tops, nightwear and lighter folded clothing. Deeper lower drawers can take jeans, jumpers or spare bedding.

There is no correct order, but frequently used items should sit where they are easiest to reach. Heavy belongings generally make more sense in the lower part of the chest, where they do not raise the centre of gravity.

Avoid filling drawers beyond their intended capacity. Overloading can affect runners, drawer bottoms and the stability of the furniture.

If you need storage for very bulky items, a chest may not be the best solution. Wardrobe shelving, an ottoman bed or a blanket box may use the space more effectively.

Consider how you will use the top

The top surface is often treated as spare space, but it may influence the height and width you choose.

A low, wide chest can sit beneath a wall mirror and provide somewhere to get ready. A taller chest may hold a lamp or a few decorative objects but be inconvenient as a dressing surface.

If a television is intended to stand on it, confirm that the furniture is designed and sized appropriately, and make sure cables can reach safely without being trapped behind the unit.

Try not to turn the top into permanent overflow storage. A chest surrounded by clutter becomes harder to use, however well organised the drawers are.

Leave enough clear space around anything warm, electrical or breakable, and do not place heavy objects where they could affect stability.

Drawer runners, handles and everyday feel

Small design details become noticeable when furniture is used several times a day.

Handles should be comfortable to grip and should not catch clothing as you walk past. Handleless drawers create a cleaner front but may use recessed grips or push mechanisms that feel different in use.

Drawer runners influence how smoothly the drawer moves and how far it opens. Full access can make belongings at the back easier to reach. Soft-close runners reduce slamming, although the exact mechanism depends on the product.

If the chest will be shared, consider whether two drawers may be opened at the same time. It is better practice to close one before opening another, particularly on taller furniture.

Stability is not an optional detail

A chest of drawers changes balance when a loaded drawer is pulled forward. Opening several drawers at once increases that effect.

Use any wall-restraint or anti-tip fittings supplied with the furniture and follow the manufacturer’s installation instructions. The correct fixing depends on the wall, so suitable hardware may need to be selected for your home.

Wall fixing is especially important in rooms used by children. Drawers should never be used as steps, and heavy items should be stored lower down.

Skirting boards can leave a gap between the chest and the wall. Some designs account for this; others may require the wall fixing to bridge the distance correctly. Do not remove or improvise safety parts without proper guidance.

Check delivery and assembly before ordering

A wide chest may fit in its final position but be difficult to carry upstairs. Measure doors, stair turns and the landing, not just the bedroom.

Find out whether the furniture arrives flat-packed, partly assembled or ready assembled. Ready-assembled chests of drawers save construction time, but the complete unit must fit through the access route.

A flat-packed chest is easier to move in pieces, although it needs careful assembly on a level surface. Drawer runners and the main frame need to be aligned correctly for the drawers to operate smoothly.

If you plan to move home soon, consider how easily the chest can be transported without damaging its structure or finish.

Choosing the right one

A low, wide chest suits a bedroom with a generous wall and can provide a useful surface as well as storage. A tall chest is better when floor space is tight and vertical space is available. A narrow design solves an awkward gap, but its internal capacity still needs checking.

Whatever shape you prefer, measure the furniture closed and open. Look beyond drawer count, decide what each drawer will hold and confirm how the chest will be secured.

A good chest of drawers should not make you change the way you move around the room. It should give everyday belongings an obvious place and allow you to reach them without a struggle. That is a much better measure of size than the number printed beside the product photograph.
