Knightsbridge Electric Recliner Sofa - 2 Seater - Granite - Fabric

You measure the wall, find a sofa that fits and think the difficult part is over. Then the footrest opens towards the coffee table.

That is why measuring for a recliner takes a little more thought than measuring for a fixed sofa. The width tells you whether it fits along the wall. It does not tell you how the room will work when somebody is lying back with their feet up.

There is no reliable “add this many centimetres” rule for every recliner. The space required depends on how that particular seat moves. What you can do is check three areas before you order: behind the sofa, in front of the footrest and around the route people take through the room.

Find out how far the sofa extends

Product dimensions often describe a recliner while it is upright. A sofa listed as 90 cm deep, for instance, will occupy more floor space when its footrest is open. Look for a fully reclined depth in the product details. If it is not shown, ask for it before deciding whether the sofa fits.

Also ask whether the back moves towards the wall as the seat reclines. Some designs need space behind them; others are made to work closer to a wall. The mechanism matters more than whether the sofa is manual or electric.

When comparing Recliner Sofas, write down the upright and fully open measurements for the few models you genuinely like. It is much easier to make a good choice between three measured sofas than to guess from dozens of photographs.

Try the open position in your room

Put a strip of masking tape on the floor where the front of the sofa would sit while upright. Mark where its footrest would finish when open. Keep your existing furniture where it normally lives while you do this.

Now walk around the room. Can somebody get to the door without stepping around a footrest? Would you have to move the Coffee Table every evening? If one person is reclining, can somebody else still sit down comfortably?

Those everyday questions are more useful than asking whether the sofa technically fits between two walls. In a living room with a narrow route past the seating, a few centimetres can make the difference between a layout you enjoy and one you keep rearranging.

Check the space as the footrest opens, too. It needs a clear path, not merely a clear spot at the end of its movement.

Do you need space behind a recliner?

Sometimes. A recliner marked wall-hugger is designed to work nearer a wall, but you still need the clearance specified for that model. Other sofas may move backwards as they open.

Do not plan to push a new recliner against the wall just because your current sofa sits there. Measure the required gap first, then work forwards from that point. If the sofa is electric, check that its power connection works from the position you have chosen without putting a cable across the floor where people walk.

What if you want a larger sofa?

The first decision is often between a 2 Seater Recliner Sofa and a 3 Seater Recliner Sofa. Check the width, of course, but do not stop there. Find out which seats recline and picture more than one of them open at once.

A three-seater may fit neatly along your wall while leaving too little room for the footrests and coffee table together. Equally, a room with plenty of depth might take the larger sofa comfortably. Your floor markings will tell you more than the label “two-seater” or “three-seater”.

For a Corner Recliner Sofa, mark out both sides of the sofa and the reach of each reclining seat. Pay particular attention to the route around its corner section.

Check that it can get into the room

It is possible to choose a sofa that fits beautifully in place but cannot make the turn into the living room. Measure your doorways, hallway and any stairs or lift on the delivery route. Ask whether the sofa arrives in sections and, if so, the dimensions of the largest section.

Keep those access measurements alongside your room measurements when you shop. If anything looks tight, speak to CFS before ordering rather than relying on a photograph of the finished sofa.

A recliner has to work in your home both open and closed. Once you have marked out those positions and can still use the room comfortably, you know how much space you really need.
