The best sofa for a busy home is not the one described as “family friendly”. It is the one you can imagine living with on a wet Tuesday: someone eating a biscuit, a dog returning from the garden and everybody wanting the same comfortable seat.
Start with what happens most often in your home. Drinks getting spilled calls for different priorities from a cat catching its claws on fabric. Pet hair brings another set of considerations. No upholstery is immune to everything, so it helps to be specific about the mess you are trying to manage.
Many people begin by asking whether Fabric Sofas or Leather Sofas are better for children and pets. The honest answer depends on the particular upholstery and your household.
A leather surface may be easier to wipe after an everyday spill, but a scratch from a pet’s claws will not wipe away. Fabric can feel warm and comfortable, yet some open or loosely woven textures are easier for claws to catch. A closer weave may be more practical if a cat or dog regularly climbs onto the sofa, although no fabric is snag-proof.
Colour makes a difference to how a sofa looks between cleans, rather than how easy it is to clean. A pale seat may show muddy paws; a very dark one can make light pet hair obvious. Look at a fabric sample beside the hair or marks you usually deal with, instead of assuming dark is always the safer choice.
If you can see samples in person, run your hand over them. Would crumbs lodge in the texture? Does pet hair brush away easily? Those small observations can tell you more than a broad claim about a material being durable.
Before choosing a favourite colour, read the care instructions for that model. If a drink spills, what does the manufacturer recommend doing first? Can the upholstery be cleaned at home, or does a particular mark need professional attention?
A zip on a cushion cover does not mean the cover can go in the washing machine. Some covers are removable for fitting or maintenance but must be cleaned while on the sofa or according to specialist instructions. Check the care label before treating “removable” as “washable”.
This is especially useful to know when shopping for a Fabric Sofa. If you are choosing leather, ask what routine cleaning and care its finish requires. Follow the instructions for the sofa you buy rather than using a general cleaning tip meant for another material.
Think about where crumbs, hair and small toys will end up. Can you lift the seat cushions to clean underneath? Are there deep gaps around the arms that will be difficult to reach? Neither design is necessarily wrong, but one may be easier to keep tidy in your home.
Cushions affect the work you will do after cleaning, too. Some fillings need regular plumping to keep their shape. If your sofa is used heavily every day, find out what care the seat and back cushions need, and whether you are willing to do it.
Try the seats with the family members who will use them most. A sofa should still feel comfortable when everyone settles down together, not merely look practical in a product photograph. Check the frame and cushion warranty as well as the upholstery care details.
If several people—and perhaps a pet—usually pile onto one sofa, extra seating room may be worth more than a compact footprint. Look at the space between the arms, not just the number of seats in the title. Wide arms can take up a surprising amount of the sofa’s overall width.
A Corner Sofa can give a family places to sit and stretch out together, provided it leaves a clear route through the room. In another home, a regular sofa and a separate chair might work better. Mark out the furniture on the floor and picture an ordinary evening, with everyone in their usual spot.
There is no need to choose a sofa you dislike simply because it promises to be easy to maintain. You will see and sit on it every day. The aim is to find one whose comfort, appearance and care requirements all make sense for the home you have.
Ask yourself what you deal with most: spills, pet hair, snagging or general wear. Then ask the retailer how your shortlisted sofas handle that particular problem. Read the care label, feel the upholstery, lift the cushions and sit down for long enough to notice whether you are comfortable.
A good family sofa will still need looking after. It should make that everyday care manageable while giving everyone a place they enjoy sitting.
