It is tempting to buy a three-seater “just in case”. Friends might visit. Someone might want to put their feet up. An extra seat sounds useful.

But if that seat is empty most evenings and the sofa makes the route past your living room door awkward every day, it may not be a good trade. On the other hand, a two-seater that leaves your family competing for space will feel too small however neatly it fits the wall.

The right answer begins with an ordinary evening at home. Who is actually sitting on the sofa?

Think about the people, not the label

If you usually sit alone or as a couple, a 2 Seater Sofa may be enough. It could leave room for a side table, give you a clearer path through the room or simply make the space feel less crowded.

If three people regularly sit together, start with 3 Seater Sofas. A three-seater can also be lovely for two people who prefer a bit of space between them—or for someone who likes to stretch out.

Just do not treat the number of seats as a measurement. Sofa designs vary more than you might expect. One three-seater listed at CFS is 185 cm wide, while a two-seater in another range is 190 cm wide. Both are recliner designs, but they show why the name alone cannot tell you what will fit your room. Compare the dimensions of the sofas you like rather than deciding that every two-seater must be the smaller choice.

Where will the sofa end?

Most of us can picture whether a sofa fits along a wall. It is harder to picture how the last few centimetres affect everything beside it.

Does the arm finish just before a doorway, or does it edge into the opening? Is there still somewhere to put a lamp and a cup of tea? Will you have to shuffle around the Coffee Table to reach the other side of the room?

Mark the width and depth of a sofa you are considering on the floor. Leave the rest of your furniture where it normally sits. You will soon get a feel for whether the extra seating is worth the space it takes.

Depth deserves a look too. Some two-seaters have generous, deep seats and a substantial frame. Some three-seaters have a slimmer shape. The longer sofa is not always the one that feels most imposing in the room.

Would you rather have a separate chair?

If the third person sits with you only now and then, a two-seater and an Armchair might suit you better. A separate chair gives someone their own place to sit and can make conversation feel more relaxed than three people sitting in a row.

That arrangement needs space of its own, though. In a narrow living room, one three-seater against the wall may work better than a sofa and chair squeezed around a table. Try both layouts before assuming that two smaller pieces will take up less room.

Sit on the sofas you are comparing

Even when the measurements look right, sofas can feel surprisingly different. Thick arms may make a three-seater less roomy than you expected. Slim arms can give a two-seater more usable sitting space. Cushion shape matters too, especially if three adults will regularly share the sofa.

Sit as you normally would. If you like curling up, is the seat deep enough? If you want to lie across it, how much space is there between the arms? If three people will use it, can they sit comfortably without feeling pressed together?

Finally, think about delivery. The sofa must get through your doors and around any tight hallway or stair turns before it reaches its new place. The product’s overall dimensions and the size of its largest delivered section both matter.

For most homes, the choice comes down to this: buy the extra seat if you will enjoy using it, not simply because there is room for it along the wall. Choose the sofa that feels comfortable with your household on it—and leaves the rest of the living room pleasant to use.
